21st Union Speaker Schedule announced

The Union will be held June 23 and 24th at Vardy Community Historical Society and Walters State Community College. Vardy will welcome visitors from 2 to 5 pm on Friday, and WSCC activities are planned for 9am to 5pm Saturday.

After a welcome from MHA President Scott Withrow at 9am, the following speakers will appear:

9 a.m. – Welcome from Scott Withrow, president of MHA.

9:15 a.m. – Dr. Tammy Stachowicz, associate department chair of Social Science in the College

of Arts and Science at Davenport University in Holland, Michigan, will have a

poster presentation by a group of her students, relating to Appalachian art and

culture.

10:30 a.m. – Dr. Katie Vande Brake, dean for Academic Programs at King University in

Bristol, Tennessee, will discuss her book How They Shine: Melungeons in the

Fiction of Appalachia (2005, Mercer University Press)

11:30 a.m. – break for lunch

1:00 p.m. – Author Lisa Alther will discuss her work, which has included Melungeon

characters, and her search for her own Melungeon roots.

2:30 p.m. – A discussion of the Melungeon outdoor drama Walk Toward the Sunset, with Dr.

John Lee Welton, director of the play which ran from 1969 to 1976, and Wayne

Winkler, author of Walking Toward the Sunset: The Melungeons of Appalachia

(2004, Mercer University Press) and an upcoming book about the play.

4:00 p.m. – A scene from Walk Toward the Sunset, performed by the children and teens in

attendance.
