MELUNGEON VOICES

Melungeon Voices will screen at the MHA conference in Logan, West Virginia early Friday evening, June 26th.   This film was recently shown to a standing room only crowd at the National Genealogical Society meeting in Raleigh NC in May.  The closing of the film was greeted with overwhelming and sustained applause, and numerous follow up questions with the filmmakers.

Julie Williams Dixon will be attendance at 13th Union for Q & A.  For a trailer of the film visit www.melungeonvoices.com

Dr. Arwin Smallwood

Also featured at the conference is Dr. Arwin Smallwood, who was recently interviewed by Julie Williams Dixon in conjunction with a program Ms. Dixon is writing about the history of North Carolina. Ms. Dixon asked him about potential relationships between the Tuscarora of coastal NC and the Melungeons, and his answer can be viewed by clicking on the link below.  Dr. Smallwood will speak about the Iroquois Nations during pre-colonial and colonial times in America.

Dr. Smallwood is a Professor of History at the University of Memphis, and has spent the last year researching the Tuscarora diaspora.  His session at the MHA conference will feature never before heard information and maps showing the locations of Native Americans and remnant bands during the 17th, 18th and 19th century, who may be related to Melungeons and other mixed ethnic groups. Dr. Smallwood is slated to speak on Saturday morning, June 27th.
